ANAEMIA
It is a condition in which there is a decrease in the quantity of hemoglobin, in the numbers of blood cells, in the volume of packed cells or in any combination of these.
The patient usually complains of weakness, fatigue, dizziness, dull & tired looking eyes, headache etc.
Diet is of utmost importance in the treatment of anemia. Refined foods like white bread, polished rice, sugar & desserts rob the body of the much needed iron. Iron should always be taken in its natural organic form in the food as the use of inorganic iron can prove hazardous.
The diet should be predominantly alkaline. The emphasis should be on raw fruits & veg. which are rich in iron.
ACIDOSIS
Acidosis is condition in which the acidity of body fluid is abnormally high. The symptoms of acidosis are hunger, indigestion, burning sensation, nausea, vomiting, headache etc. It is a breeding ground for most diseases. The main cause of acidosis of the blood is faulty diet, in which too many acid forming foods have been consumed. It can be prevented by maintaining a proper ratio between acid & alkaline foods in the diet.
Whenever a person has acidosis, the higher the ratio of alkaline-forming foods is his diet, the quicker will be the recovery .Acid is neutralised by alkalies. It is therefore imperative that persons suffering from this disorder should be given adequate alkaline forming foods to offset the effects of acid-forming food & leave a safe margin of alkalinity.
CANCER
It is the most dreaded disease, refers to all malignant twnours caused by the abnormal growth of a body cell or a group of cells. It is today the second largest killer in the world, next only to heart ailments. The symptoms of cancer vary according to the site of the growth. The prime cause of cancer is not known. Certain cancer-causing substances known as carcinogens however increase the chance of getting the disease. Other factors contributing to cancer are viral infections, trauma, hormone imbalance & malnutrition.
The effective treatment of cancer consists of complete change in diet. Besides total elimination of all environmental sources of carcinogens such as smoking & chemicals in air, water & food. As a first step, the patient should cleanse the system thoroughly, relieve himself of constipation & make all organs of elimination the skin, lungs, kidneys active.
The best way to prevent cancer is to build up the body's defenses through excellent nutrition.
HEART DISEASE
The term coronary heart disease covers a group of clinical syndromes arising particularly from failure of the coronary arteries to supply sufficient blood of the heart.
A diet rich in fatty foods, especially animal fats, causes fatty substances to settle in the coronary arteries, thus blocking & narrowing them.
The basic causes of heart disease are wrong food habits, faulty life style of living & various stresses.
The fundamental factor in all heart diseases is the diet. A corrective diet designed to alter body chemistry & improve the quality of general nutritional intake can, in many cases, reverse the degenerative changes which have occrued in the heart & blood vessels.
DIABETES
Diabetes mellitus is a nutritional disorder characterized by an abnormally elevated level of blood glucose & by excretion of the excess glucose in the urine. Diabetes is also known as the "prosperity" disease primarily caused by systematic overeating & consequent obesity. Not only is the over eating of sugar & refined carbohydrates harmful but also of proteins & fats, which are transformed into sugar if taken in excess & may result in diabetes. Too much food taxes the pancreas & eventually paralyses its normal activity.
Any successful method of diabetes treatment should aim at removing the actual cause of the disease &building up the entire health level of the patient. Diet- therapy is the basis of such a treatment. The primary dietary consideration a strict lacto-vegetarian & take a low-caloric, low fat, alkaline diet of high quality, natural foods. Fruits, nuts & veg. whole meal bread & dairy products form a good diet for the diabetic. The patient should avoid over eating & take 4-5 small meals a day rather than 3 large ones.
HYPERTENSION
It is regarded as the silent killer. The most important cause of HTN is stress. Persons with high blood pressure should always follow a well-balanced routine of proper diet, exercise & rest. Diet is of primary importance. Meat & eggs cause blood pressure to rise more than any other food. Vegetables are also good for a patient of hypertension. They should preferably be taken raw. If they are cooked, it could be ensured that their natural goodness is not destroyed in the process of cooking. The intake of salt should be restricted.
The patient should follow a plan of a well-balanced diet in which the constituents of food should be approximately in the following proportion:
CHO 20%
CHON 10-15%
FAT 5%
FRUITS & VEGETABLES 60-75%
The diet should be lacto-vegetarian, low in sodium & calories. It should consist of high quality, natural organic foods, with emphasis on whole grains seeds, fresh fruits & vegetables.
The diet should consist of nutrients as near to their whole natural state as possible so as to ensure an adequate intake of the essential vitamins, minerals & trace elements.
Patients should increase their intake of foods rich in Vitamin E, as this vitamin promotes heart functioning by improving oxygenation of the cells. It also improves the circulation & muscle strength.
