General Description of Bhai Devinder Singh

Born on Dec 10, 1955 to father S. Beant Singh and mother Mata Charanjit Kaur, (Bhai) Devinder Singh, right from his childhood days, recognized an in-born quality in him to serve people around. Supported by religious thoughts and lust to serve humanity, he learnt Kirtan and strarted reciting Gurbani from his childhood days. A sweet spoken and attentive listener, Bhai Sahib (now called as "Veer Ji' with respect) completed his studies of graduation with English, Political Science and Punjabi while studying in Khanna-his native place. Hailing from a Gursikh family, all through his life he has drawn inspiration from Sikh teachings.

He understands that honest work creates healthy institution and community life. He views, "Sharing with others, caring for the poor and needy, standing for freedom and justice, being grateful to God and working together in community for the good of all are the things that bring health, peace and prosperity."

These characteristics in Bhai Sahib drew attention of 'Panth Rattan' Late Bhai Sahib Bhai Jasbir Singh Ji Khalsa Khanewale (founder chairman of Sri Guru Harkrishan Sahib (C ) Eye Hospital Trust), who persuaded him to perform ' Sewa ' at Gurdwara Gur-Shabad Parkash Akal Ashram, Sohana as Head Preacher in October 1991. To wake up during wee hours ( Amrit-Vela ) and to start reciting Gurbani , ' Simran-Sadhna ' (meditation), Katha and Kirtan from 3.00 A.M. has been his daily routine since then uninterruptedly.

Bhai Sahib's disciplined living earned him respect around the world. And on December 14, 2003 Bhai Jasbir Singh Khannewale, while addressing a large gathering of Sangat announced the name of Bhai Devinder Singh Ji as his (Bhai Jasbir Singh Ji's) successor.

After the demise of Bhai Jasbir Singh on Oct 14, 2006, he took over as Chairman, on Oct.17,2006, of Sri Guru Harkrishan Sahib (C ) Eye Hospital Trust (established in 1983) which runs Sri Guru Harkrishan Sahib Multi-Specialty and Eye Hospitals at Sohana (1995), Khanna (2003) and Sirhind (2003) under the auspices of Gurdwara Gur-Shabad Parkash Akal Ashram (1983) Sohana and was conferred the title of 'Veer Ji' by Sangat . The Trust also runs Sri Guru Harkrishan School of Nursing also.

Widely traveled to many countries, has become a source of inspiration for millions. Everywhere people have been generous in their support of what the trust is doing in rural India. For him whole world is one. Regardless of peoples' skin color, language, nationality, religious faith, what they eat -all are one.

He spells, "We all have same needs - food, shelter, clothing, and opportunities for learning, education, health care and meaningful work." He always prays that God may grant strength and courage to each one. The life of Veer Ji, which is full of struggle and achievements, is like a light house for turning out the welfare of the society.
